Getting Rid of Gum Disease

About Me

Getting Rid of Gum Disease

Several years ago, I scheduled an appointment with my husband’s dentist. During my visit, I was shocked to learn I was suffering from gum disease. I discovered my gum disorder was caused from not seeing a dentist in more than five years or flossing my teeth daily. To treat my gum disease, the dentist prescribed a medicated mouthwash for me to use twice each day. I also had to undergo multiple, professional cleanings at the dentist’s office. I began flossing every day too. In a few, short months, my gum disease was completely cured. On this blog, I hope you will discover smart, simple tips to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for life. Enjoy!

Reasons Not To Fear A Root Canal

In the past, having a root canal could be a frightening experience. Many people who underwent the procedure spread tales of discomfort about the treatment. Nowadays, although root canals are relatively painless due to advances in dentistry, misconceptions cause some people to still fear the idea of the treatment.

Here is some information about root canals to help you overcome any hesitation to undergo the procedure.

Sedation Dentistry Is Available

If you feel any apprehension or anxiety about having a root canal, you may be a great candidate for sedation dentistry and oral surgery. Your dentist can offer you a sedative before or during the treatment to help you feel calm and anxiety-free.

The sedatives provided may be administered by mouth, using a gas or through an injection. Those sedatives that are taken orally are usually taken about a half hour before your root canal treatment begins. Inhaled and injected sedatives are more likely to be applied in the dental office just before the start of the treatment.

Localized Anesthesia Is Used

During a root canal, local anesthesia is used to ensure that you don't feel any pain as the procedure is performed. The anesthesia is usually injected into the gums surrounding the affected tooth to numb any sensations of discomfort. The dentist may even apply a topical numbing agent to the surrounding gums before administering the injection.

Root Canals Eliminate Pain

Root canals can help rid you of a painful toothache. Many root canal treatments are performed because of a dental infection.

As a tooth becomes infected, the soft material within the tooth, which is called the pulp, may become inflamed. The inflammation irritates the nerves within the tooth to incite discomfort. Frequently, the nerves are irreparably damaged by the infection.

As a root canal is performed, the pulp of the tooth is fully extracted, leaving no dental nerves behind to cause pain. In addition, the inner chambers of the tooth are disinfected to eradicate any signs of infection. Once the tooth is properly cleaned, it is filled and covered with a dental crown.

Root canals can also alleviate the pain of extreme dental sensitivity. Dental nerves may be damaged through the abuse of teeth-whitening products. The damage can cause chronic dental sensitivity.

For more information about root canals, schedule a consultation with a dental provider in your local area. He or she can review the state of your teeth to determine if a root canal is right for you.
